convolk’s recent record Caught in a Hailstorm takes an original, widely popular style of hip-hop and blends it with elements from all across the spectrum, spinning a new twist to create something fresh. Opening with the upbeat, brisk “Dead in December,” the project throws you straight in from the moment you press play. The track production from CJD reminisces that of a Pierre Bourne instrumental, whilst convolk’s vocals carry through in a kinetic manner to keep up the energy. Although many other songs such as “Tears in My Angel Wings” (prod. cormill) keep up this traditional trap style, there is still much more that the project has to offer.
If you fast forward the sixth track “After the Accident,” the electronic production is absent, only to be replaced with live instrumentation. Produced by talented Malaysian musician SunSeiRO FX, the track is a light heartened, colourful piece, pulling at the heartstrings after every play. Sounding like something straight from an emo rock band like Brand New, “After the Accident” leaves a pleasant surprise midway, keeping you enticed to eagerly listen to more.
Despite the thumping trap drums and robotic synths, early song “Drink 182” gives the perfect Pop Punk notion, with convolk’s lively attitude to resemble the old style of acts like Sum 41. With this much energy, the song is certainly one that would verve a crowd in an instant.
Overall, the project is a big step ahead in his career. Impossible to put in a box, Caught in a Hailstorm is not only a fresh set for convolk, but for the scene altogether, as such a blend of genre and style is difficult to master.
