Artists struggle to separate themselves from the mob, and often attempt to do so through strange fashion, extreme body modifications, or bizarre vocal styles. While others get lost in an ocean of imposters and try-hards attempting to outdo one another, shrimp swims calmly.
By providing a concise, clean, and oddly tranquil sound, the Atlanta, Georgia based Vocalist/Producer subverts the competition with a unique angle on music. shrimp recently released a new single entitled “smile” which is an exemplary song to showcase what makes him exceptional.
A restrained sing-song delivery, with slightly unexpected melodies and plenty of breathing space let you linger on shrimp’s words. Lines such as “fuck you bitch you said I never could, now I’m better than you ever were” and “I don’t want that ice up on my teeth ‘cause I don’t smile” reveal an introspective, sensitive, yet vindictive attitude. This duality is mirrored in shrimp’s production, with aggressive 808’s chugging along under a nostalgic feeling synthetic arpeggio. Dry, simple hats and snares clatter along to complete the scene.
Keep an eye out for shrimp and associated acts Staryu, 6dogs, and lil hawk boy, as “smile” is merely a glimmer of the larger works to come.
