LEARNING TO BE ALONE by watergh0st

Not familiar with watergh0st? Soon you will be. The New York native’s newest project LEARNING TO BE ALONE is a distorted, swooning adventure full of hard hitting emotions and true to life annotations. “The whole project is about like being suffocated which is why I didn’t release any versions of the songs with choruses,” explained the 21 year old singer/songwriter. This project is far from glossy pop music, yet there is still something to cling to from each song. From the ethereal guitar loops in “well here we are” to the scaling vocal chops on “idk final,” the pieces fit like a missing gem in the soundscape of today’s “SoundCloud scene.”

LEARNING TO BE ALONE is entirely produced & recorded by watergh0st herself, just as most of her music has been in the past. This self production gives the project a personal touch, much like most of the bedroom artists we’ve come to love. When I asked about her approach going into this project she said, “I’m really interested in using sound as a way to represent different types of architectures, and I guess when you’re in a situation where you feel suffocated and also isolated, a wall is a great structure to play with.” In “used to be,” a sonic wall was used to convey a feeling of isolation and rejection that is topped off with sonic speed drums closing in, capturing anxiety in its purest form.

The end of the 5 song EP feels like watching your favorite character in a romantic comedy being crushed, yet pulling themselves up by their own heart and keep pushing. I’m anxious to hear more of this ambient side of watergh0st for the rest of the year, along with her more upbeat side projects. If you haven’t checked the project before, it’s never too late listen to LEARNING TO BE ALONE in it’s entirety below.
