A SoundCloud profile by the name of Lil Tofu popped up roughly a month ago, and with currently less than 450 followers and only two songs, it can easily be dismissed as one of the million of insignificant projects you can find on this platform. However, not even 30 seconds into either song it’s immediately apparent by the voice and extremely high production quality that the man behind Lil Tofu is none other than the rising star nothing,nowhere.
Gaining significant attention from his album Reaper, which was named by a New York Times columnist as the single best album of 2017, the incredibly talented artist Joe Mulherin has been known to release work under a number of different titles. The track “GMO Free,” released as the profile was created, clearly matches the sad trap sound of most of his main releases.
Yesterday’s release “Living Lies feat. Mr. Boochie” has a significantly more mainstream beat with a quicker tempo than almost any other song he’s created. Like the previous song, the vegan related puns and unusually upbeat confidence separates Lil Tofu from anything else we’ve heard from him. Mr. Boochie’s feature pushes the song far enough away from the alternative rock sound you’re used to hearing on the nothing,nowhere. page that one begins to wonder if Lil Tofu has the potential to cross over into the rap scene. On top of the feature, you hear nothing,nowhere. lay down bars with a flow and speed that you can’t find anywhere else in his discography, making listeners eager to hear more.
Another thing to note was is within the first few moments of “Living Lies” being released, the account was briefly renamed ‘Nature Boys’. While it was quickly changed back to Lil Tofu and ‘nature boys’ was moved to the bio, it is safe to assume that this project is one to watch. If the next releases are anywhere close to the sarcastic, high quality tracks released so far, it will be in nothing,nowhere.’s best interest to bring this side project into the spotlight.
