Slug Christ, an artist known for his extremely unique vocals and deconstructed sound, has been steadily gaining popularity for the past 5 years. Working with significant artists in the underground, Slug Christ has pushed the boundaries of music by staying true to his loosely constructed melodies and nontraditional composition style. smrtdeath, with only a year’s worth of release history on his profile, has become an icon as a feminine emo singer that’s been closely associated with Lil Aaron & Lil Lotus.
These two artists definitely have had overlapping fans and even producers for awhile now, so it was hard not to wonder what a Slug Christ/smrtdeath collaboration would be like.
Finally, today we got to find out; “stepping into sin” produced by taxpurposes, is pretty much nothing like you would imagine these two would sound like together. smrtdeath’s vocals sound similar to his recent releases and a signature taxpurposes beat, there’s no question this song fits seamlessly into his library. What was surprising about this release was Slug Christ’s verse. His recent album release Judas’ Betrayal and the Three Day Burial of a Salted Slug is a great example of some of his best quirks, and absolutely an accurate representation of his personal sound. This classic Slug style is probably what most fans expected when this song release was announced, but this was not the case. An artist who usually sounds like he’s completely free of the classical music constructs seemed tied down to this beat. His voice seamlessly compliments smrtdeath’s in a way that seems to be a straight emulation of his vocal style.
There are two ways to look at this: either praise the artist for being able to recognize the intended mood of the song and contribute as a feature without becoming distracting, or question the choice not to contribute something more with his personal flair. It’s a quality song overall that those who prefer smrtdeath over Slug Christ will undoubtedly enjoy, it’s just those people who enjoy both equally who could be disappointed if they were anticipating something that blends both their styles.
Regardless, the resulting benefit of this collaboration is apparent for both artists. Whether or not the two continue to work together, its hard not to look forward to the possibility of another release that showcases them their talents equally.
