While acts such as nothing, nowhere. have seemingly opened the door for rap infused alternative projects to strive, many artists are beginning to follow suit, blending punk esque rifts over trap drums. Many artists have successfully done so over the years preceding nothing, nowhere., but one artist in particular has garnered a group of followers within his first 12 months on SoundCloud. Musician deadbeatteen has blended ambient guitar pickings with sullen harmonies to create a unique catalog of songs.
Perhaps you could argue that deadbeatteen is just one artist of many in the newly redefined emo explosion. However, one thing that deadbeatteen has on his side is an overwhelming amount of heartfelt and emotionally expressive lyrics.
Crooning aloud “I’ve been dreaming of your face for a minute/ my linen still smells like your last visit/ and I’ve been feeling left out” on song “nothing but distance.” The listener must ponder along as deadbeatteen searches for answers from a far away lover through the track. The song in itself is a perfect example of how deadbeatteen has refined simple guitar chords with calming vocals into an overall ethereal and emotional experience.
Where many artists continue to rely on the cliches of partying and exploring the city nightlife, deadbeatteen has curated his music to create a bedroom feel of loneliness. This expressed numbness through his music can be highlighted on songs such as “mistreatment” and “how did we wind up here (acoustic).”
With only 16 tracks posted to the independent streaming site, deadbeatteen has culminated a small but devoted fan base with a little over two thousand followers on SoundCloud. Already receiving coinciding praise from fellow SoundCloud alumni 93FEETOFSMOKE, killedmyself and velvetears, deadbeatteen is poised for an explosion in the underground world of grief.
