SosMula is Bringing Violence Back to Hip Hop

Devils Advocate” begins with a shaky, yet equally eerie laugh that transforms into wailing a few seconds later. Despite the chaotic start, the sample is quickly overshadowed by SosMula himself as he comes into the track screaming, proving just why he is one of the biggest acts coming out of New York City today.

Alongside frequent collaborator Zillakami, SosMula is spearheading screamo rap forward. The duo have a collective of songs on the SoundCloud account HIKARI-ULTRA, which is nearing 20,000 followers, a feat his Instagram has already surpassed. His videos and lyrics all contain the use of hardore drugs, and his Twitter cover is him holding an actual rocket launcher. He frequently raps about violence, and is authentically living the life he raps about as a Bloodz member. Everything about the artist screams unapologetic.

Evidently, despite the controversial nature of SosMula, he has proven that he can be successful. He has a quickly growing cult fanbase and is making waves in the underground community. His two biggest songs “SHINNERS13” featuring Zillakami and “Home Invasion” featuring Dave East have each collected hundreds of thousands of views (over 700,000 and 400,000 respectively). The biggest critique about his music is that SosMula is not versatile and can only make screamo rap, yet this is far from true. Instead of attempting other styles, SosMula has perfected his own sound and shown versatility in his own way – through the production. While all the vocals feature the same aggressive cadence, the beats are never predictable. He can go from Japanese inspired production on “JET GRiND RADiO” to the more trap influenced “Wardog Anthem.”

SosMula is not reinventing hip hop or even attempting to, rather he is focusing on creating a sound for himself, which has worked as seen by his incredibly loyal fanbase. The rapper has collaborated with big names because of his work ethic and talent, yet has received very little media coverage or exposure, making him a true Underground Underdog.
