Instead of relying on purchasing tracks and searching for specific sonic dynamics, artists simply have begun producing for themselves. Dylan Brady, Lil Soda Boi, guccihighwaters (notmorgn) and Shinigami all have been self producing as of late, and have seemingly curated a sound that blends together effortlessly with each of their respective styles. Eighteen year old Melbourne based atmospheric artist harvest has released the brand new track “coming closer,” displaying he can hold his own as not only a producer, but also as a vocalist.
Having released multiple projects in the past as well as producing for acts such as Lil Lotus, fats’e and OmenXIII, harvest is ready to develop prosperously on the scene all alone. When asked whether or not harvest likes to produce compared to fully create his own songs, he says that he at first “wasn’t quite sure” whether he preferred being a producer over a full fledged vocalist combination, but has since grown to love it. “Being able to provide more elements to a song instead of just making the instrumental is very satisfying, and I feel like it allows me to connect to a song on a more personal level.”
Ambient guitar strings provide background lullabies as the track “coming closer” begins. Simple yet satisfying hi-hat rolls and percussion helps float the beat along as harvest whispers over his instrumental.
While harvest sings soft and effortless, the meaning is not lost in his atmospheric melodies. Harvest sings:
think straight, look at what our love made // your right ways have led me to your aid // first day, i noticed that you didn’t fade // into the shade that makes me just run away
When writing to his guitar notes and percussion blended together, harvest ran into the theme of love saying, “I wrote the lyrics for this track after I went for a walk with my girlfriend, I came into it thinking about how lucky I am to have such genuine and rewarding relationships with my friends, my girlfriend and family.”
Harvest is able to freely form words over his beat in a painless stroke. His soft warmth overlying his dark guitar ultimately leaves the listener very satisfied.
According to harvest, “coming closer” is only a taste of what’s to come. The album, Subtle Fold, should be out before the end of summer and will have a similar echoey, gentle vibe like “coming closer”.
“When I made (coming closer) I tried to sum up how I imagined the album would be like if it had to be only one track long,” explained harvest. “I’m planning on doing a small pressing of the album onto cassette tape along with (the release of the album)… but fingers crossed it will be finished by June!”
