Chicago born and raised, WemmyMo has established himself as an important artist to watch as Chicago’s music scene begins to burst in the same manner it did in 2012.
If you haven’t heard Wemmy’s music, you’d be happily surprised once you turn on any track and hear the reminiscent sound that Chicago birthed a few years back, with artists like Vic Mensa, Chance the Rapper, and those alike in SaveMoney. You also couldn’t deny the heavy soul samples you hear, which Wemmy attributes to his time spent in Church growing up.
“Not too sure if my love for soul comes from the gospel I hear in church, but I do know it does something internally that I admire a lot. Something I feel every human would appreciate. The feeling received from soul is what i believe music is truly suppose to express.”
Wemmy got into music at the ripe age of 5 years old, but never thought he’d be rapping. Playing the drums and keyboard growing up, introduced him into the world of production in high school. Afro beats and Fuji music played as a big inspiration to him, along with trap and Chicago drill music that influence his more upbeat tracks. Thankfully, he received an outpour of recognition from peers for the bars he would write along with the production and decided to drop his first song on SoundCloud, “Misunderstood.”
“Misunderstood” has now reached 1.79 million plays.
The song is an extraordinary showcase of Wemmy’s ability to story tell, but keep the audience at interest through his understanding of his own voice, and what his words can do to keep a listener on their toes. Produced by Ty Goods, the track samples Sally by Sade and sets you back to a simpler time, a story of his dynamic with a girl and his interactions with others.
All of Wemmy’s music tells you a story, one that your closest, funniest friend would tell you. His voice is that of something raspy but lively tone, coupled with his playful wordplay paints a picture you can’t help but envision when you listen.
When speaking with Wemmy, it’s easy to see that his role in the Chicago scene is important to him. His sound is a refreshing one; a multi-toned experience that is hard to uncover in the current standing of mainstream Hip-Hop. You can feel he’s setting out to reinvent the current standing that Chicago music is at.
“Chicago artists are fighting out here man. Chicago is just filled with independent artists, from the mainstream to underground! I don’t think any other city has as much creative and innovating artists like Chicago does. I honestly believe my age group is the next big thing for Chicago. The drill sound has reinvented itself in a sense with these new wave of artist like Lil Pump, Smokepurpp, Tay K, etc. But Chicago is about to be back on top like 2012/2013 very soon, just watch!”
What can we expect from WemmyMo in the coming months? A tape titled BitterSweet set to arrive late May or early June. He notes that the tape is promising to those who “appreciate real artistry. It’s not one sided!”
