The heavily anticipated Misery Club breakout track, “Left Side,” has pranced itself into our laps. Comprised of beloved vocalists Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Lil Zubin, Fantasy Camp, Jon Simmons, and veteran producers Foxwedding and Nedarb, the emo-alternative group is already generating a lot of buzz.
For a song with a title that acknowledges only one half of space, the track is uncannily balanced. Produced by Foxwedding, “Left Side” is dotted with twinkling triangle notes, reminiscent of the orchestral percussion in SECRET BOY and ALONE. Drifting through the song is like swaying along to a lullaby. A syncopated bass drum pulls the listener down to earth so as to not get lost in the floating melodies. Mid-tempo kicks propel simple, elegant guitar riffs forward into each forlorn yet self-reflective verse.
Layered vocals at varying melodic intervals set the tone for this confessional. Wicca Phase croons the first verse, longing for an honest conversation that can only be admitted in a state of non-sobriety. Jon Simmons also speaks on the honesty in alcohol. He admits his faults, even saying “If you want to leave, girl, do what you have to” upon driving himself home, alone, after the final fight. Lack of intimacy drowned by self-medication is touched upon by Fantasy Camp, who does feels alone even among physical company. The song ends with Lil Zubin’s torment of yearning for reconnection but knowing the certainty of “waking up all alone.” His voice lilts us into a soft, periwinkle finale.
“Left Side” is hopefully an example of the quality collaborations of great minds that are to come. We cannot wait to hear more Misery Club creations, and eagerly await the next project from the rising underground supergroup. Take a listen to the track below.
