Anything but Average: Unaverage Gang

Hailing from Las Vegas, a thriving city probably known more for colorful EDM shows than grunge subculture, UNAVERAGE GANG is on its way to becoming a name to know. The shadow rap duo consists of artists Vague and Angel of Death (familiarly known as AC). Mournful singing, hell-raising raps, smooth flows, and booming beats are just a fraction of the depth these earth demons play with. Take a listen to Mad Manson and Violence to get a taste of their versatile, yet consistently eerie, music styles.

Gaining increasing momentum over the last year, both AC and Vague said in an interview they’ve been interested in and making music since their early teenage years. This isn’t uncommon – most self-produced artists cite the adolescent phase as explorative, especially when traditional self-expression is difficult. Songs like Jaw of the Hounds give us an intricate view into their pasts of pain, sufferance, and depression through satanic imagery, bloodshed, and occult activity. Lyrically, UNAVERAGE GANG leaves no dark stone unturned.

When asked about working with artists with whom they’ve always dreamed to collab, UNAVERAGE GANG agreed it is “Definitely an accomplishment feeling, but we will always feel like we haven’t achieved enough.” Artists and producers Muppy, SCHIZO, Ramirez, and JO$HEATN are but a sample of the talented artists and producers UNAVERAGE GANG has worked with. It’s almost impossible to wrap our heads around what wild sounds they could come up with next, but right now “it’s just milestones as we grow more.”

UNAVERAGE HUSTLE, the group’s tenth EP, is a collaboration with zombie-rapper Black Smurf that stays true to UNAVERAGE GANG’s rap roots. The first three tracks’ trap-like beats amp up dark energy with distinct kicks, snare rolls, and loaded 808s. “MEMPHIS MURDER“, the EP’s final track, wraps up the story with a melancholic melody.

Their most recent project, TALES OF THE CRYPT, is more diverse sonically. The EP starts off with highly compressed electric guitar wails, transitions to a lyrical lo-fi beat, and ends on unique, repeated piano jingles supporting old-school hi-hat patterns. In just three tracks the pair covers many different biblical allusions and diabolic rituals. This is perhaps one interpretation of the many their songs have; it’s a matter of deciding whether you want to continue peeling back all of the twisted, painful layers.

When asked about upcoming projects, UNAVERAGE GANG confirmed that another EP with SCHIZO is on the way – but that’s all the details we’re getting for now. “We don’t plan on disclosing much information about it as it’s a surprise for our fans.” Are you as intrigued as we are?
