Today, many artists find themselves trying to break the cliché mold of a heartbroken young adult. Safe to say, seventeen-year-old singer songwriter Yung Sherrf does not fit a conventional mold of a new age emo artist. Sherrf is a very unique individual as he produces some of the best harmonies throughout the underground over minimal production, mixed in by himself.
Written, recorded and tracked within two hours, ‘i hate myself’ follows Sherrf as he deals with conflicted feelings about a love, singing aloud:
i hate myself // more than you do // you get me lost by the things that you do
“I made my girlfriend upset and she is the only one who truly loves me,” explained Sherrf. His sincerity in his voice throughout the acoustic track will invoke listeners to look for deeper meaning within their own relationships. Sherrf went on to say about his flame, “(She) cares about me, I still regret my mistakes.”
While the song itself shines because of the simple melodic flow, the production by Cartoon Ben enhances the simplicity in this songs greatness. “I know Ben for quite some time. Ben was friends with Hawk and Yung Mess and we just became friends after we joined dxd.”
Yung Sherrf made a collaborative effort with lil happy lil sad, leading him to be found by members of dxd in 2017. Eventually, it lead to Sherrf becoming a core member. “Yung Mess followed me so I followed him back. We started talking and he introduced me to Hawk and that’s basically how we became good friends.”
Hailing from the Netherlands, Sherrfs distinctive tone throughout his music is not in his original language. While playing Pokémon, Sherrf picked up English.
“I was a big fan of Pokémon, and still am, but I really enjoyed playing video games but all the games I bought were in English and not Dutch,” clarified Sherrf. “So I didn’t really have much of a choice so after I played some games I started memorizing words and after four years, I could understand dialogues in the game.”
Throughout “i hate myself”, listeners will easily feel the chilling tone of self-reflection. Sherrf says that he “felt terrible at the time” and “hated himself”. “I wish I was someone else with a better personality.”
Yung Sherrf is easily one of the best up and coming artists throughout the scene without having clichés attached to his name or music. His infectious flow and meaningful lyrics are only a piece of what makes Sherrf worth checking out.
“I don’t have a project or anything but I just wanna tell my fans that I’m thankful for everything I have right now,” Sherrf explained. “I love my listeners and I love talking with them, it makes me so so happy.”
