While many artists today can wield the necessary tools to flourish in the music industry, many lack conviction and honesty within their tracks. Rapper Marc Goone, however, is one of the many underground emcees that always presents a refreshing and authentic view throughout his music. Released five years ago, “Dear Mom” is an amazing, emotional ode to Goones late mother who passed away due to her battle with lung cancer.
Produced by the always exemplary Judge, the track begins with single notes over an emotional section of strings. Goone begins his verse by explaining his current overcoming emotional confusion. Goone explains that he’s “not the best with words”.
Knew there had to be a vial, or a potion, or a doc // My emotions, they would spiral, with the notion of you not // Being here forever, my denial turned to shock // Cause dad has been my idol, but you have been my rock
Dropping into Judges beautifully looped percussion, Goone seamlessly spills out his heart. Goone has conflicted feelings about the way his relationship with his mom was when he was younger, but asserts that she was everything to him while growing up.
After the catchy yet meaningful chorus, drums fade and become an echo of an uphill fight during the second verse. Goone goes on to confess that even with how everything has happened, he now understands his mother’s assertion that “everything happens for a reason”.
I beg you not to see this as a funeral procession // Shit happens for a reason, life is beautiful, a blessing // And I know it don’t seem right, but carry on // Cause after every night, comes a dawn // I just want you to be happy cause before we know it life is gone // I love you mom, the fight is on
Throughout “Dear Mom”, Marc Goone is able to authentically detail a harrowing yet real moment from his life and translate it into his own musical expression. With the track, Goone has seemingly created a hit from not only skill and ability, but from truth.
