Brennan Savage and Coldhart’s “Waiting All Night” Leaves You Searching for Positivity

With an understated gut-punch of a track, Brennan Savage and Coldhart‘s “Waiting All Night” (produced by the legendary SLIGHT) leaves us with a lot of questions; why do we suffer? Why do we continue on? Why are we left alone with our demons? Like a dim lighthouse through the thickest fog, “Waiting All Night” begins slow, creeping into your cerebellum, reminding you of the bleak loneliness that our thoughts can hold. The echoing of the titular phrase in the lo-fi landscape of SLIGHT’s instrumental sets the perfect ground for you to imagine your own worst nightmare. Every drug runs out eventually, every feeling has a climax, and every ending started somewhere. As we begin, Brennan Savage lets slip some of the first lyrics of the verse, “I’m in all black you can bury me inside my jeans.”

Like the gentle peace that comes after the first bump, you feel the anxiety begin to grow. The noise around you intensifies as you try to focus. “But I’ll be alright,” the song beckons as your thoughts desperately try to escape. However, a thought without a resolution just keeps growing, “Cause I be geekin’ off white, staying up all night.” One cycles through doubt, relief, doubt, and relief, until it’s unbearable. “It’s on sight, gang ready to go” as you and your demons seek to take the next escape by any means necessary. A desire to be heard creeps in, “If you’re in my place, would you see my face?” This constant shuffling of emotion provokes one into attention. “I been waiting all night.” One’s empathy grows as you imagine yourself in the same situation; what are we waiting for? What are we doing here? Coldhart comes out of the darkness like a sweet reprieve, letting us know, “I be playing with my life, I don’t wanna live long.” Wait, fuck. Where’s the reprieve?

Coldhart continues, “I wanna hear you all, damn, like my favorite song.” Everything we’re feeling is validated when put into the proper light, but how many emotions can we feel at once, how many voices can we acknowledge? “Shawty take your time, I want all of you. I would sacrifice everything for you.” The spectrum may be daunting, but we shouldn’t give up. Feeling something is better than ignoring everything. With patience, positivity will come, even if it needs to traverse through pain and hardship. While you may be going through your worst right now, it can mean something if you don’t lose focus. You need your sorrow, you need your worries, you need your doubts. Trust that it’s worthwhile, believe that it’s worth it and the rest will come. Never lose that hope, please. We all deserve a better tomorrow.
