Why You Should Get Familiar with LA Based Artist Solomonilla

Solomonilla is another unique and talented artist that’s been flying somewhat under the radar. Despite that, he’s got a thorough and extensive catalog and established many major industry connections. He is frequently promoted by Lyrical Lemonade and a lot of his music videos have been released through Elevator. His work ethic is something that shouldn’t be overlooked, and Solomonilla explains that “I’ve been doing this for about 6 years now. Been making music my whole life though.” He spoke to us about his past, his music, and the album that he has been working on.

After some legal trouble, he left Maryland and headed for California. The 24 year-old broke down the reasoning for moving to Los Angeles, “Been here for 2 years now…I left my hometown because of some legal bullshit and cops knew all about me and just camped outside my spot. Just small town shit. It was right once I was kinda popping off in my little area and throwing shows in VA, I had just barely made it through my trial and got out of jail. So I just had this dream to make it all the way across the map so I could smoke weed and make music in peace. And it’s definitely panned out that way for me. I miss some things about that place but nothing to make me go back unless I could perform and live in peace. I just doubt that would happen. So I keep my distance. LA has been very welcoming and I just stay tucked away working on my album. It’s been great for real. A blessing.”

A long-time love which has even influenced Solomonilla’s creative direction is skateboarding. His passion for skating can be seen in some of his videos such as “Gas” where he’s riding around the city. He talked about his struggle to stay on the board consistently. “Because of this album, I’ve been slacking. I dislocated my shoulder 6 months ago skating and took a break because I didn’t want to stall on music. But I’ve been dying to get out there. I usually would skate 4 times a week or all week when I’m on my shit. So many parks and spots to hit out here. When I was a kid I would have loved this shit so I try to take advantage of it for younger me.”

He also spoke on the variety of artists that influence him to one extent or another. “Kanye West, his whole catalogue inspires me. It’s great work. I wanna push myself to do my own thing like that. Curren$y, Lil Wayne , Toro Y Moi, Cam’ron. When I was a kid I was a huge Blink 182 fan. Big L, Pharrell, I listen to a lot of different shit and feel like an ass for leaving some out but those are my favorites for sure.”

The humble artist just wants to focus on keeping the music great and ignores the traps that other artists might fall into. “I just would like to be happy, A cool fan base that enjoys what I do and to travel. All that extra shit isn’t for me. The awards … all that. I just wanna make great music I believe in. And that others believe in. And it takes time but I’ve already done so much I’m proud of myself for so I’m cool with that. I have way bigger plans but I just take it a day at a time and enjoy what I have you feel me…Finish this album, make music, skate more and do a few more shows. I’m just focused on the album though.”

There’s no release date yet for the forthcoming album but he promises it won’t disappoint. “I’m oping by August or September, but it will be completely produced by me and it is definitely worth the wait. Just been improving and compiling my best songs for it throughout the process. Still releasing some music along the way. So I stay busy.”
