Yung Scuff the Star Seeker and Macho Randy, no strangers to UU, released their first collaboration yesterday “Better Things” produced by hard working favorite DJ Khaled’s Son. I can’t say I saw this coming, despite having followed both artists for almost a full year; Yung Scuff known for his lo-fi love songs and use of beautiful guitar beats, while Macho Randy known for his high quality vocals with quirky third person lyrics. These two aren’t exactly an obvious match, yet the product of both their styles is something unexpectedly soothing that will still get stuck in your head.
The song itself is authentic coming from two artists well on their way to underground fame. “If you don’t make the money right, it ain’t happening,” is most likely referring to both artist’s relatively newfound ability to monetize their talent in the form of selling features to peers on the platform. Then followed by, “If you don’t write the songs I like it ain’t happening,” pointing to the fact they can afford to start getting more selective about their interactions as well.
Besides more or less establishing their current status in the underground, the two flaunt a confidence that also begins to feel more authentic. Macho Randy has been known to create content with a fun and flirty degree of confidence that’s hard to come by, while Yung Scuff’s undeniable talent in writing love songs allows him to bring a certain sophistication to any of his projects. Combined the listener really is lead to believe these two have ‘better things to do’. The ethereal trap type beat provided by DJ Khaled’s Son allows the great vocals from both these artists to shine through while still letting the lyrics to hit hard enough to be taken seriously.
“I got inside jokes with your girlfriend;
She just fell in love with me, how embarrassing”
If Scuff and Randy stay on this so-called ‘boyband shit’ I can definitely see it being beneficial to both their attempts to find a larger soundcloud audience. Both artists bring something incredibly unique to this song and the fact that it works so well is exciting. Whether or not they collaborate again going forward, you’re going to want to enjoy “Better Things” for the hit that it is.
