With his most recent song “wait on me”, the Swedish forest-dweller d1v bestows upon us an indication of what’s to come with his debut album “moodswing.”
Mark these words – It will be worth the wait.
Let’s get this out of the way. d1v is not reinventing the wheel. What he is doing is making music that will set it’s hooks in you with only a couple lines muttered.
The true strengths of this song lie in the combination of unique cadence, melody, and strangely chest-heavy timbre of d1v. The delivery style absolutely commands attention and wields the accompanying beat as a weapon, as opposed to simply tagging along for the ride. At a cursory glance and listen, he may appear to be just another troubled youth who decided to whine into a microphone; and he is. However, make no mistake; d1v has polished his abilities beyond the bulk of hopefuls.
Thematically, “wait on me” is less of a direct statement on any one thing in particular, and serves more as a stream-of-consciousness collage of his frame of life in that particular moment. Questionable methods of self-medication, bleak life observations, and strangely motivating glimpses of light are spattered throughout the 3 minutes run time. Add a couple memorable lyrics and special moments; and you have “wait on me.” Another infectious melody added to the repertoire.
August 25th is a date to watch. With further development and refinement, d1v may just raise his ceiling further than most would expect. We’re watching.
