Yung Prenup is Nostalgically Reviving Pop Music

LA native Yung Prenup has been gaining traction with his upbeat music and nostalgic twists on late 2000s pop hits. Having both produced and provided vocals for himself, Prenup has also worked with producers such as SK, Pink Nokia, and Kotonaru. Having spent a lot of time recording recently, we caught up with Yung Prenup to ask about his upbeat sound and what he has planned for the future.

“My music has always been about having fun. Even when I’m touching on a not-so-fun subject lyrically, the whole point of listening to Yung Prenup is to dance and turn up! I consider my music to some kind of combination of pop and trap. I draw a lot of inspiration from Hannah Diamond and Danny L Harle when I’m deciding which beat I’m going to sing on. One of my goals is to perform on stage in a pop group or boy band of sorts.”

In his early teens, Yung Prenup experimented with traditional instruments and, as a result, more traditional kinds of music. Despite this, Prenup’s true colors are shown in his most recent musical endeavor. Heavily drawing inspiration from dance music, such as house and pop, you can really see what he is aiming for in his first song “Not In Love.”

“I’ve always had a love of fun music. Riding around in the car with the windows down, speakers turned all the way up…So when I heard about PC Music, it really resonated with me and sparked a kind of revolution in the music I wanted to make. I remember the night I made the beat for “Not in Love” was the same night I heard Hannah Diamond’s music for the first time. Since then, I’ve just been trying to put my own spin on dance-y trap music.”

Though Prenup’s music is typically positive and fun, his lyrical content ranges from fun to more serious and sometimes wistful and sad. Even with upbeat pop influences and his desire to get people on the dance floor with his tune’s, when asked about the scope of his style, Prenup had this to say:

“I don’t really want to be restricted to one style of music. Right now I make fun, poppy music because that’s what’s most fun for me to make. I don’t even know what kind of music I’ll make next.”

Yung Prenup is only sure of one thing and he wants to make sure you know it. “Yung Prenup is coming for world domination.” Perhaps it’s too soon to determine if that will happen, but one thing is for certain — his music will get you up and moving.
