Although sick girl has been releasing music on SoundCloud for a short five months, she is already displaying a clear vision, authentic styling, and great potential. With her macabre monotone vocals and sincere lyrics, sick girl is reaching new heights of vulnerability with her Ayh Okay produced single “death wish/feel alive (feat. Ayh Okay).” Ayh Okay’s trap instrumentals are subtle and somber and f
eatures clean acoustic chords, leaving room for sick girl’s longing echo to fill the listeners ears.
“I’ve had the same flowers since I was fifteen/ I got them as a present for the cheats and the schemes/ I plucked all of the petals and i took them to my dreams/i asked the gatekeeper why does nothing stay green?/she held my hand and whispered ‘honey, you’ll find something sweet”
We are given a story of grief and yearning to stay close to the memory, the feeling, of a person who we cannot reach, and the loss of innocence that comes with losing someone you love. When asked about her process of creating “death wish/feel alive”, sick girl commented that:
“The song is about a previous relationship with someone who feels like my forever person. You know, like no matter what happens I will always love them and they’ll always love me. In the beginning I talk about these flowers I’ve had since my first relationship whens I was 15, and I do still have them, they’re sitting in a bottle of Hennessy on my dresser. They’re kind of a metaphor for the death of my romantic innocence.”
“Death wish / feel alive” is an aching narrative, beautifully executed. The track is descriptive of the area between life and death, where we connect through dreams, mementos, and emotion. Ayh Okay ushers us out of sick girls death wish, with a reminder of the of the will to live, to hold on despite the pain,“ I feel alive since the very first time, I saw you.”
