The emotional conviction of California based artist drippin so pretty knows no bounds. Despite a busy 2018 of consistent releases, he has found new and refreshing ways to bare his soul to audiences; re-hashing his torments through smooth vocals. Though the poignant content of his lyrics cut you to your core, the melodic, distorted cadences soften the blow.
Continuing his trend of steadily sharing refreshing content, he has released WORTHLESS , the highly anticipated EP set to captivating production from YAWNS (with help from fellow GBC producer Fish Narc.) The layered complexity within the four tracks is no surprise, but still impressive; each of them telling the story of love lost to addiction, whether it love with another or love for one’s self. This paired with YAWNS’ inventive, cutting edge soundscapes beautifully paint a cathartic, painfully honest story.
Title track “WORTHLESS” sets the tone for the project. Distorted riffs ring through as drippin so pretty sings about a broken relationship; showing how one hurts those they love through inner demons and broken promises. The angelic delivery of the harsh lyrics capture the back and forth nature of co-dependency.
“I don’t wanna feel sick without you, so please stay by my side.
Told you that I wanted this forever but baby I lied.
I lied to you, you cried and said I’m worthless,”
A smooth, ear catching slide into “Toxic” gives you no time to lose interest, as drip admits to himself the extent of the toxicity while telling a tale of dependency; whether it be to a substance or person. Over an alternative guitar, multi-percussion layered complexity, it shows how one loses a sense of self when you surrender your existence to something; and the difficulty of overcoming an undeniable pull while getting yourself back: “I don’t know what world I live in, I’ve given you all I can give. You so in love with me again, I pulled up quick you hop right in.” The song features a verse from Cold Hart, whose vocals melt alongside drippin so pretty’s, sharing their personalized experiences of toxic love.
The transition from “Toxic” to “Falling Apart” is effortlessly seamless, showing the attention to detail YAWNS and Fish Narc each have. This track strikes listeners with a brutally honest account of life at the mercy of addiction; painfully detailing the little control one has when at this point and the how clinging to a life after feels impossible.
“Woke up as myself, why I do that?
Woke up as myself, what happened?
Do this shit again ’til I’m dead in a casket,
Saying that you care, but girl, you are not an actress.”
The tape comes to a close with “Tragedy,” which provides a general theme throughout; the tragic nature of toxic love, addiction, and the journey to overcome both. The clever double entendre has him throwing blame at his lost love while describing the separation as tragic, implying he harbors some of the responsibility.
Tragedy is defined as a story in which the protagonist falls at the expense of his own character flaw, and drippin so pretty is the perfect example of a tragic hero. His story reads like Greek theatre, with each of the tracks in WORTHLESS standing as acts in a play. In just four tracks, YAWNS and drippin so pretty crafted a cohesive masterpiece that communicates to the masses.
