The Death and Rebirth within 33 Life’s “Butterfly”

The well established vocalist, producer, and visual artist “Clout Cohen” was in need of a rebirth.

The stained and cursed word “Clout” has so thoroughly saturated the lexicon surrounding music that it has transcended memetic utility straight into the ground. (After which, the corpse was hung from the rooftops of Complex for all to marvel in disgust. Now imagine having to rid yourself of this stench upon every first “hello.” Therefore, a new dawn rises for Alex Cohen in “33 Life.”

After touring through the southern United states with his peers, Cohen and Atlanta producer Madara TBH began working together, and the results thus far have been spectacular. Starting with the single “Butterfly.”

“Butterfly” eases into pulsating synth chords interwoven with melodies that duck in and out of one another in small swells — a simple but beautiful frame for 33 to illustrate his vision. It feels alive and breathing. Cracking snares and a strong melodic backbone of 808’s set the pace.

33’s multi track vocals arrive in hushed tones and ethereal wisps. They breathe melody and rhythm that vary just enough to be absolutely compelling. He often lets the beat roll as slight echoes linger to further accentuate the laid back, yet somehow cryptic feeling put forth lyrically. The song structure breaks the established flow and feel of the song at just the right moments.

According to 33 Life – This single gives form to a dream-like contemplation on the cycles of life and death, and the symbolic moments scattered in between. Lines like “Suck my dick like you mean it,” “Sipping vodka outta lemonade jars,” and “Turn the moon into sunlight, then I turn into a butterfly,” glide us through a slice of the world that 33 Life inhabits and is at peace with. 33 himself explains “At every moment I’m looking into the meaning of things. I’m one to — to over analyze.” (Even during oral sex.)
