Like something out of a crazy fever dream, baby.com’s newest video “ONE THING!!!!” starts off wildly, and quite honestly is better seen instead of read about. After a sampled opening, the video becomes even more unpredictable as it cuts to a shot of baby’s friends, wearing bright colors and goofy sunglasses while an animated fairy flies around. In typical baby fashion, the first 10 seconds alone set the precedent that continues throughout the entire video of a light hearted, humorous approach to the trap sound that continues to dominate the scene.
Notably, the fairy also introduces baby.com and the producer, underground alumni OOGIE MANE. The bubbly production from the established producer works in harmony with baby’s joke-filled and playful lyrics. The rapper, adorned in a selection of plastic sunglasses and colorful beads in her hair, manages to execute her own unique sound without crossing the line too far and being taken as a joke, and the result is a carefree, laid back video.
Alongside fellow director Boxhead, baby.com is able to create visuals that further build onto the song, resulting in an almost strange (yet equally successful) combination of a typical summer anthem video with Twitter meme culture. With her unmistakable style and finesse, combined with her infectious attitude, baby strays away from typical rap cliches, and instead paves her own lane, and that is truly baby.com’s strength. Everything from her fashion sense, to flows and beat selections, to even her cover art choices and rap name are so effortlessly unique to her.
