New York artist Harry Styles PpgCasper is back with his new track “One Direction,” his first proper solo release since his youwouldntbelievemept.2 EP back in June. NYC producer Harrison is utilizes a twinkling guitar lead supported by a cast of jittery ascending hi-hats to flesh out the beat. The kick drum drives the beat forward as Casper’s ghostly backing vocal melodies seep into the empty spaces of the minimalist instrumental creating a hazy, smoked out backdrop for Casper’s lead vocals to cut through.
PpgCasper chooses to match the ethereal atmosphere of Harrison’s production by adopting an understated delivery that is more breathed than sung. You can hear the breath passing his lips as Casper near whispers his way through his lyrics without ever sacrificing his mastery of melody. The catchiness of the hook here is undeniable.
“In the club you on the guest list
Imma pop another pill because I’m eating it for breakfast
Yeah you know I leave her breathless
She just fell in love said I look like One Direction”
The chorus finds Casper flexing his status, but the content of his verses deal with Casper’s usual musings on his drug use, emotional state, and conflicted relationships. He raps about taking pills for breakfast and sniffing coke just to stay awake, but Casper confides in his listeners revealing that his biggest vice is actually his lover as he wrestles with his feelings and writes, “You’re the one in my head, you turned me to a fiend.”
After a string of features over the past couple of months it’s great to hear PpgCasper delivering a proper solo track for his fans. Hopefully, PpgCasper has more new music coming soon and we may not have to wait too long. The description for this song reads: “HEY WELCOME TO CASPER SEASON MAN,” and he recently announced a side project via his Instagram story. Until then, listen to “One Direction” below.
