The underground hip hop scene is a humongous, bustling community packed to the brim with artists and fans; new people are joining every single day. When the ‘Underground’ is mentioned, many big names come to most peoples mind, however the roots of the music usually go overlooked. Schema Posse is a collective who played a key role in molding the scene we know today, with a plethora of members over the years that may surprise some. The Posse have been inactive as a collective for a great deal of time, their future looked bleak. Despite this, newest release; “The Gold EP” proves that Schema is back and they’re not holding any punches.
Despite plenty of changes in the roster, the collective are still going strong with a deluge of members tee. First track “In the Cut” demonstrate this perfectly. Featuring vocals from Jgrxxn, Weez, Dank Sinatra, S.A.M, and Kold Blooded, including production from Natsu Fuji and Boz, the track is rammed with artists, yet far from overcrowded. The chemistry is immaculate, with each vocalist transitioning into the next spotlessly. The instrumental is clean yet rigid sharp, with giddy keys vaulting over the punchy percussion.
‘’My creative process is to not think at all,’’ Schema produced Boz told us. ‘’I just whip up in the moment without plans by looking for an unique sounds and just go from there. With both of these tracks I supplied the core melodies and the other guys added the drums and effects.’’ The collaborative effort on the EP are evident, with complex melodies, versatility and pacey structures.
Next up comes “Pallbearers.” This track takes the demeanour of a classic style of rap. Intense violins, dark chimes and a rumbling sub, the instrumental, produced by AyoZa and Boz, is sinisterly daunting. Featuring vocals from Eden Ivy, AyoZa, Chiiirp and NV, each verse is menacing, feeling fresh from the soundtrack of x horror movie. The song give off the reminiscence of heavyweights of the 80s such as Bone Thugs n Harmony, whilst providing something fresh and new.
The vibes get breezy on the 3rd and final track ‘Upside Yo Head’ featuring Mr. Sisco, NEME$I$, Buddha Jones, and G Low Key. Sampling the classic track ‘On My Way’ by Suga Free, the tranquil track leaves you feeling euphoric ally nostalgic, kicking back from the stresses of everyday life. The flow of each artist on this track suits the vibe ideally, reinforcing the carefree feeling. Despite the worries of many fans, The Gold EP lifts the uncertainty of a return.
‘’Most of us always stayed in touch’’ Boz told us, ‘’It feels right and good to be making these projects again, it’s fun.’’
Schemaposse are back for certain, and the future of the collective looks exciting.
