Nothing short of intense, there’s a blunt force presence BLVC SVND brings to music that few can boast. Unabashed lyrics and purposeful performance mark his audacious style. Wanting to expand his musical palette, BLVC SVND gifted us with a crisp and energizing EP, NUNU, that will intrigue original listeners and new fans alike. It’s an expeditious venture into less loaded thematics while maintaining his trademarked robust spunk.
Singing wasn’t always in the books for the protean artist. Before being the gut-wrenching lyricist we know today, BLVC SVND was a producer. His sounds were (and still are) known to be metallic and abrasive, qualities he shares with his vocals. Almost two years ago he released his first solo compilation, DIVO, a weighted piece dripping with loud drums and profound bass lines. Technical evolvement from then to now is present, but with a traceable vein of audible grit that’s remained consistent over the years.
For what seems like the first time, BLVC SVND allows a peek underneath the heavy metal influences and ballistic behavior. The four-track EP is his most melodic project yet and covers topics unrelated to annihilation or intense sexual activity. Not necessarily light but definitely lighter, NUNU really is BLVC SVND’s self-written, mixed, and produced foray into new styles and fresh flows.
“DIFFERENT FREQUENCIES,” the first track, begins in typical BLVC SVND distant dystopia. As soon as his voice comes in, however, listeners know immediately that this project is unlike those before. The beat is both forward-driven and laid-back. Describing himself as a “rare ass entity” isn’t a fallacy, and supports the idea that BLVC SVND operates at a different level than his peers.
“TATTED UP!” is a relatable ode to the fine art of permanence and pain. For BLVC SVND, tattoos are not just a means of braggadocio. Ink on skin, no matter the style, is akin to a bookmark for memories. Not a fashion statement or grasp to stay on trend, there’s more to BLVC SVND’s actions than what’s seen on the surface.
“I ain’t with that fake shit” sums up “LOYALTY” and its following track simplistically. It goes without saying the immense amount of artifice in the industry, especially amongst independent artists who rely solely on their own laurels. It’s a strong setup for “IM NOT LIKE U GUYS,” a chant for the real ones that see more in their craft than fame and fortune. BLVC SVND’s ability to expand within and out of his genre proves his unlikeness to any other artist.
Notorious for distinct snares and brash lyrics, listening through NUNU is a half-sigh of relief. It’s exciting to hear what our favorites are capable of when pushing their artistic boundaries. No matter the direction BLVC SVND chooses to walk next, it will undoubtedly be original, exciting, and compelling. Listen to what else BLVC SVND brings to the table here.
