Straight out of Dallas, Texas comes two rising stars — S3nsi Molly and Lil Brook. The frequent collaborators recently joined forces once again to drop their first installment in a volume of collab EPs titled DumbShit. To follow up the Tuesday project release, the duo dropped a double-video for their tracks “Stu Shii” and “LetsGetIt” via HalfpintFilmz the day after. The videos are directed by EvijanJohn and are a beautiful display of the two Texas MC’s friendship, talent, and chemistry that can be found all over DumbShit Vol. 1.
When we are introduced to Molly and Brook, we find them in the midst of a studio session in Paramount Studios, passing around joints bigger than Shaq’s fingers in a control room full of people, making the title of the first video, “Stu Shii,” an appropriate one. On this first track, Molly and Brook pass bars as seamlessly as they pass the joints whose smoke fills the air of the room the video is shot in. One will start a bar only to have their punchline completed by the other. The flows are varied and dynamic and while the lyrics may not go deeper than bragging about smoking and gun talk, both artists show why they’re commanding so much attention right now; because few other rappers are coming with bars as hard as these two.
The duality of the video is rooted in the fact that it’s two songs from two artists, but this combination brings a balance to the track beyond just lyrical content. The history between the two artists is tangible as they compliment each other — both literally and figuratively — all over both of these songs. Brook comes with a smoother vocal tonality that provide the perfect counterbalance to Molly’s signature rasp and natural grit. Both artists know how well they work together and the magic that becomes visible when both are perfectly in their pocket and that affection is apparent in their lyrics. Around the minute-and-a-half mark, Brook declares that, “Molly only bitch that I rock with,” only to be reciprocated a few moments later when Molly spits “And Lil Brook that’s my bitch.” It’s an amazing display of chemistry that is nearly impossible to be replicated, even on your favorite rappers’ collab projects.
The videos are both relatively simple but extremely appropriate given the nature of the songs they accompany. Both are mostly one scene with the occasional change of scenery but are all that is needed when juxtaposed with the simple and sparse production of both tracks. EvijanJohn puts his editing skills on display with clever cuts that transitions nearly every shot into the next. The video for “LetsGetIt” has a more lo-fi approach with a VHS-effect overlay laced throughout the brief video which helps set it apart from the all-around stronger “Stu Shii.” The entire four-and-a-half minute visual is more like two friends having fun watching each other shine than a carefully coordinated music video.
While this is the first time the two Texas rappers have appeared on Underground Underdogs, both talented MCs have been making waves in the Texas scene and beyond for a minute now and we can’t wait to see where they go from here. Check out the video below.
