As the underground scene today has become more of an open network of creation with a plethora of singers and songstresses, it can be a fun challenge to wade through the many to find hidden gems. Australia’s very own Vierre Cloud is one of the few artists that wields true musical expertise while also being criminally underrated. Within his catalog of ever enjoyable tracks, “Butterfly” is an astounding demonstration of precise rapping along with excellent self production.
The song begins in an almost dramatic while tuneful build up. As keys flicker and strings begin, Cloud broadcasts flows about how he is feeling as if he is supposed to flutter away from his current state of well being. Throughout the track he raps about hope and finding a way to leave problems behind:
Get up off the ground ’cause tomorrow is different // You say you love the drugs but they won’t love you back
While the seventeen-year-old Sydney native has been inspired by the likes of Oliver Francis and MF DOOM, his main inspiration today is to currently drive out as much music as possible even through his most painful moments.
“I’ve gone through some pretty dreadful times in the past year, often it was hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Cloud explains. “When I was writing this song I was and still am in an amazing place mentally, (and) I just wanted to explain to the listener that it does get better.”
The atmospheric yet enchanting orchestrated beat contributes to the songs overall memorability, and it is ultimately the product of Vierre Cloud himself.
“The beat went through a bunch of changes, originally it was a lot slower and pitched down with different drums,” according to Cloud. “I was super inspired by Quincy Jones because I watched some documentary on him and all I wanted to do was some shit with orchestral instruments.”
As Vierre Cloud persists through his pathway into becoming a breakout underground star, he has thoughtfully curated his next moves. Although Cloud does not have any intention of dropping a project soon he plans on garnering together a strong fanbase with the release of “fresh sounds and videos”, ascending to his own cementation as a new star of the underground.
