My first experience with the colorful Blossom Reynolds was at the Cleveland date of Version III’s “Where Are All My Friends Tour,” where Blossom was the final opening act before the special guest appearances. I had spoken to him prior to his performance and his demeanor was soft spoken and calm, as he told me how he’s no stranger to performing, citing hundreds of shows he’s previously played while in various bands.
Fortunately for Blossom that night was entirely different, and he alone would be the focal point to those in attendance. Blossom took the stage and the room watched as his calm demeanor melted away into an animated and lively stage persona. With Blossom only one song in, the crowd immediately fed off of his vibrancy, and began jumping around with a ferocity tantamount to Blossom’s. He commanded energy like the captain of a ship. I had never seen an opener control the room as well as Blossom Reynolds did, and that’s what got me hooked on his catchy material.
Blossom is an ever-improving mural, and “Ca$ket” is Reynolds’ best work to date. With a high register resting somewhere between Kellin Quinn and Lil Lotus, and twice as emo, Reynolds sings:
“I just had to check and see
If you were still right next to me
It sounded like your voice
But on these drugs it could be anything”
The beat’s groundwork is laid by a spacey sub-bass and supernatural pads, which are tied together with trap drums and tight percussion. Reynolds’ layered vocals cascade handsomely over the creepy, cute production of ilovehxllywood.
