Chynna is a Philadelphia born rapper who, if you’re unfamiliar, has been active in the underground for over 5 years at this point. She’s released singles and short projects throughout her tenure with should-have-been-viral smashes like “Glen Coco” and “The Conversation.” Coupled with her rise in popularity came a descent into opiate addiction and a stint in rehab. She kept this experience with addiction mostly concealed from her fans, only hinting at it in song, until fully opening up as she hit sobriety milestones over the past years. Now, on her newest single “IDDD” (I Don’t Do Drugs) she takes pride in leaving the drugs behind.
I dont do drugs no more
I dont do drugs no more
Or not the ones I got caught for (wink)
Mot the ones the block hot for
This cheeky refrain that gives the single it’s namesake serves as a reminder that she is still Chynna. Dropping her habit hasn’t made her soft. If anything she appears more resilient and confident than ever. Her attitude and subdued, near-whisper delivery still shines over production by frequent collaborator, 48th Street. The lyrics and video here feel cathartic as they paint a picture of both release and reflection. She unburdens herself of her past demons by acknowledging her growth and her sobriety while simultaneously reflecting on the hardship that brought her to her current place.
In the video Chynna visits a lonely motel room and an inner-city overpass that represent classic images of drug use. However, instead of a needle or a prescription she struts forward with a Jameson bottle in hand dancing in the halls and streets of locations that represent her former struggles. At one point she flips through a journal with the words, “In case I die, publish this one,” scribbled on the front. Thankfully that disclaimer is no longer as pertinent as it once may have been.
“IDDD” is a far cry from the current lyrical landscape where references to drug use have become a commonplace. But Chynna isn’t here to condemn you. She’s too focused on herself. Even though this may not be the drug anthem you’re accustomed to, this is the song that you’re getting. This is Chynna and she doesn’t do drugs anymore*.
