Florida based artist Yesterday has had nothing short of a jam-packed past year. Releasing his first full length album Boy Toy, a pair of extended plays and even a collaborative EP with Voka towards the end of the year, Yesterday’s output of music has been more than lofty as of late.
The self produced track “Restart” is Yesterday’s own critical response to annual resolutions of changing your ways. Yesterday however is in no hurry to figure life out, as he lets listeners know from the jump singing:
I’ve got all the time in the world // To figure it out // The root of my sorrow // The pain and the doubt
The track features some of Yesterdays best production to date, as “Restart” is structured specifically around emphasizing and celebrating Yesterday’s vocal performance. The excellent transitions and instrumental movements shy away from overstaying their own welcome, and the track overall grips listeners throughout with its luxurious piano and warm guitar. Throughout the song there is a plethora of diversity, yet the most intelligent stylistic change happens towards the conclusion of the track.
Trap flavored drums and percussion give the track a bouncy feel, setting Yesterday up with the perfect foundation for a distressed ballad until drummer Jordan Davis arrives. As the song concludes, Davis performs some of the hardest head splitting drum work ever conceived on a Yesterday track. Opting away from serenading vocals, Yesterday begins an unfeigned yelling over the sporadic percussion pattern yelling aloud:
Leaves fall and I’m falling apart // Had to pick back up // Think I gotta restart
If “Restart” is any indication of what Yesterday has in store for listeners in 2019, then this year is guaranteed to be one of indentation for the blonde-tipped heartthrob, and is sure to bring that many more enthralled listeners to the table.
