Sophie Meiers Shares her “wingspan, demos” EP

On January 8th singer-songstress Sophie Meiers released her first project of 2019, Wingspan, Demos. Written, performed, and produced by Sophie herself, the four track EP showcases the amount of talent she possesses as well as her growth as an artist. Stepping away from her usual dreamwave/lofi sound, Sophie takes a slower, almost melancholic approach that leaves you wanting more.

Giving listeners the familiar feeling of nostalgia, “day by day/box of cards” opens the project. Recalling time spent with what seems to be an ex-suitor, the track begins with a reference to its title; “I stole a pocketwatch from the last place that I saw your face, I stole a box of cards from that corner store where we used to stay.” Delving into a very catchy chorus, Sophie finishes her thought, “I’m tired of this rundown excuse for a place, I feel like everything just starts to feel the same.”

Continuing on the path of rumination, “forget me not” provides a look into the thoughts that this artist has kept inside; the feelings of incompetence and loneliness as she feels she was left to “rot” have boiled over to a point where Sophie is tired of it all:

“I wish that I could flip a switch or take a pill to make it better // You say that it can’t rain forever but I’m fucking tired of this weather.”

glorious disaster” is a ballad of self-examination. Revealing her regret of “jumping the gun” and rushing into love, Sophie calls herself “a glorious disaster” and ponders the possibility of her ex-lover thinking the same as she sings, “I wanna hear all the things that you’re thinking about me.” Backed by gloomy pop synths, this track stands out from the rest as it produces a more futuristic sound than the others.

Bringing the project to its complete end, “bruises and satin” feels as though a new leaf is about to be turned over. Although she apologizes repeatedly throughout the song for the way she feels, Sophie also realizes that she may have wasted time on the wrong things; “too much of my time, too much of my life writing songs for people while the stars fall from the sky.” It is this revelation that helps her realize what she truly wants and deserves:

“You make me feel like I’d be happy if I tried // You make me want to put some effort in my life.”

With this being Sophie Meiers’ first project of the year, we can certainly expect more to come. While we wait to see what she has in store in these upcoming months, listen to wingspan, demos below.
