The work of British artist Muppy is something that you are much more familiar with than you may realise. His production on tracks like “6 Feet”, ”Bands”, and many more from trap metal heavyweight Scarlxrd have racked up millions of plays on SoundCloud and YouTube alike. His solo work however, gets unfairly overlooked. Their new, self produced EP: Burn This Place shows what you’ve been missing out on.
Opening up with sinister keys, the dark melody of “Hard Stuck” lifts your hairs as it creeps into your headphones. Without injunction, the weighty percussion slaps in, escorted by Muppys bullish delivery. His distinct tone of voice and rapid flow weave through the beat with the morbid “I can’t really get a grip, I’ve been stuck in motion,” hook clawing through.
Following this comes “Fickle Souls”, getting straight to the point in an instant. A disorientating flicker of chaotic notes hurdle back and forth, out of control. The deranged instrumental seems impossible to pin down, however the brisk, agile raps from Muppy clamp down on the beat like a python.
The pace slows down with third track “Desolate”, however the vigor stays in attendance. With a much more minimalistic beat this time around, Muppy has more space to maneuver around, and he uses this perfectly with an arsenal of tongue twisting rhymes topped off with a destructive delivery. This is similar to fourth track “Pressure”, proving that a hard hitting 808 isn’t always necessary to make a song kick.
Things speed up with follow up “Crash”. The pre-released track will be familiar to prior fans, however it keeps the stamina of the project strong. Accelerating ahead with abrasive percussion, this track offers the final push towards the end. Closing track ‘Can of Worms” ends the project with a heavy blow. Despite being heavily downtempo, the tracks distorted guitars and ominous bass rattles a sinister tone. The abrasive, deafening screams from Muppy leave you uneasy, yet enthralled at the same time.
Despite a short runtime of 12 minutes over the span of 6 songs, Burn This Place gets to the point and leaves no remorse. With him popping up at more live shows and steadily releasing solo music, lets hope 2019 is the year Muppy gets recognised.
