Dream, Ivory Pick Up Right Where They Left Off on “Scorpion”

It’s been a little over two and a half years since the Baello brothers shocked the SoundCloud world with their heartfelt, paradoxical hit in “Welcome and Goodbye”, and just about two years exactly since the release of their dreamy music video for “Red Love”. While Ginseng confirmed that they would be unfortunately scrapping their plans to finish their fan-favorite EP Flowerhill Drive, previews of a new song in the works via Louie’s instagram ignited fans’ hopes that maybe, just maybe, Dream, Ivory would come to stay once again just as they had back in 2016, to deliver a perfect soundtrack to relationships, sunset drives, and everything in between. This Valentine’s Day, the brothers certainly didn’t disappoint even in the slightest.

Between the rhythmic bass licks and lingering percussion, “Scorpion” finds Louie uneasy, though not explicitly; his words reverberate as they nearly drown in the lush fillings of his elder brother’s synths and hypnotic guitar work. Heartbroken and poisoned, Louie delineates a lost relationship with his significant other; one where even foreknowledge of the outcome from the beginning couldn’t save him. The song’s lyrics and message almost perfectly align with their million-view masterpiece “Welcome and Goodbye” in that even though Louie knows completely well just how treacherous and emotionally threatening his situation stands, he cannot stop himself; he runs right back into a toxic relationship that he seems to never be able to escape from. The two verses on “Scorpion” detail two different outlooks: the first sees him recounting the monster he created out of someone he loved, and the second describes his terse, conflicting thoughts on being unable to run away from her despite his worries and fears.

“Oh no // You know that I won’t be just fine // Tonight, tonight // I’ll take your poison wine”

With “Scorpion”, dream, ivory have successfully put themselves back on track to pick up right where they left off in 2017. Creating blissful, melodic tunes that can accurately depict and soundtrack multiple emotions and situations isn’t exactly an easy task, yet Louie and his brother Ginseng seem to effortlessly tackle it every single time. While many feared the group’s dissipation with their transition to college as well as Chris’ elevating status as a producer, the siblings seemed to have their 2019 planned out with the announcement of a new EP this summer entitled Lost Dogs. With their eager, dedicated fan base right by their side, dream, ivory have set themselves up to surpass even the loftiest goals for the coming year and beyond.
