Breakups are tough. A sudden descent from the highs of love and attachment will impact even the most hardened individuals. Emotions run hot and are only escalated by miscommunication, blame, self-questioning, and the desperation to cope with the fallout in any way possible. Irvington, New Jersey artist Plynoffkee captures all the moody bitterness that is so often experienced in these early post-relationship stages on his newest single, “Anymore.”
The production by Nonbruh features punchy, crashing kick drums and a moody, lilting melody that reflects the subject matter of the track. Plynoffkee raps with a soft-spoken delivery that makes it feel as though he’s engaging in an internal monologue as he reflects on the end of a relationship.
I’mma pour that dirty in my cup ‘cause I need it
I done dropped enough messages I know you seen it
matter fact I hope you took time to read it
matter fact I hope you left cause I’m leaving
In these opening lines alone, Plynoffkee creates a microcosm of coping mechanisms. He first turns to drugs and makes unwarranted attempts at communication before finally accepting the situation. Later in this pre-chorus, he focuses his sights on “rebounding” and mulls over who truly let who down in this relationship. Perhaps the most pertinent lyric in the song is the refrain.
I might get a fast car, just to drive slow
I don’t know anymore, anymore
In this single line, Plynoffkee effectively encapsulates the entire sentiment of the song. A new, fast car might bring him some pleasure, a new way of coping, but what’s the point if all he’ll be able to do is drive slow and continue to ruminate on the past?
Listen to “Anymore” below and keep an eye out for Plynoffkee’s upcoming project, Birds Fly North, due later this year.
