Walk Along with Sullii in His Latest Visuals for “MINE”

Through his newest audio-visual release for MINE, Sullii gives us a glimpse into his upcoming project You And Everything Blue. He explores the battles between ownership and independence, enmeshment and freedom, truth and manipulation. Conflicted, he tries to focus on his authentic intentions but keeps coming back to the rumination of “you”. “MINE” remains an ambiguous cliffhanger; is Sullii able to stay true to himself, or do his ideations keep him tied to something, or someone, else?

Before the artist Sullii, there was Josh Rogers, the lead vocalist for band Crooks UK. His initial fanbase grew within Crooks but really took off when Josh released Pallettown almost a year ago under Sullii. The song made its way on his debut EP, 42, which wowed listeners. Its repetitive lyrics and hauntingly melodic patterns would shift moods swiftly and subtly like changing tides. It was a method of storytelling unheard of within anything in its genre. Since 42 Sullii has gifted us with thoughtful, sensitive singles, including “MINE”, that wrap us in his emotionally burdened blankets.

“MINE” is raw. Produced by Crooks UK guitarist Jacob Dutton-Keen, the song’s ambiance is both heavy-hearted and lightly mystical. In the video Sullii finds himself in an open space clouded by grey skies, thick forests, and tall swaying grass. A hazy mist adds a cozy gloom to the already bleak setting. Donning a sweatshirt boldly printed with “You And Everything Blue,” we are intrigued by its forthright message. The punch line is clear and relatable:  “I’m trying to be mine but I’m dreaming of you.”

Coming to terms with all of one’s quirks and eccentricities is lifelong journey. Milestones along the way help guide and remind us that we’re moving in the right direction, but deep, genuine acceptance of the whole self is a journey rather than destination. We constantly straddle between being honest to ourselves and saving face towards those around us. Sullii tells of his struggle to keep his head above waters when his mind swells with unhelpful thoughts; “I couldn’t care about me, how could I care about you?” “MINE” is the balance between self-care and selflessness.

It has been a while since we’ve heard anything from Crooks UK, but it does not appear to have disbanded. Perhaps their members are taking a break, cultivating their own sounds or venturing into varying artistic branches. Regardless, Sullii continues to finesse his craft, hitting key emotional sensors that sway listeners into paying closer attention.
