Born and raised in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood of South Side Chicago, eighteen-year-old HateSonny has already been releasing music via Audiomack and MyMixtapez since 2016. With “Gone,” HateSonny delivers yet another nihilistic track, this time seemingly aimed at a lover who is blind to love lost. The song features futuristic and dissonant co-production from Lowsock and Sonny’s long time friend Flexafendi.
After speaking with Sonny about the track, he confirmed it was about an old girlfriend who failed to see he was no longer invested. Sonny was also fighting writer’s block while recording the song, a result of scarce inspiration. He admits, “I smoked some gas and made this in like half an hour.”
Adlibbing his way into the track, the beat and verse come in simultaneously, with booming bass shaking Sonny’s vocals. The arrangement is full and layered, thanks to the collaborative effort from Flexafendi and Lowsock. The song is rooted in a grimy, underworld-like feeling, but also has a flittering high-noted keyboard lightening the dreary sound. His verses feature a fast-paced, aggressive, and deadpan flow delivering bars in a straight-forward, fact-of-the-matter manner to get it through to the song’s muse that, “It’s over with me.” Sonny’s flow ping-pongs between the low subs, controlling the pace of the song with every bar. The song ends with the vocals and production being chopped and slowed, giving the lyrics a bit more room to breathe, driving the message of the song home and giving the listener an opportunity to reflect.
From the concerted efforts of Flexafendi, Lowsock, and HateSonny, the three create a track that is sonically as apathetic as Sonny’s last relationship yet still invigorating to the listener.
