While the underground pop scene has continuously grown as of late, singer-songwriter Elisha Tayler has been quietly crafting his own emergence into the brightly growing genre. At only 20-years-old, the Brooklyn-born artist has already cultivated a small yet devoted fan base with his emotionally endearing music. With the recent release of “faded & jaded”, Tayler gets as soul-stirring as ever as he details his own past experiences with failed relationships.
The track “faded & jaded” begins with a soft hitting kick, followed by an entrancing slow bouncing hi-hat pattern. The light pads fill listeners ears with luscious warmth, and Tayler soon begins to gently croon along the Cobra produced track.
I knew you retract I don’t fold like that // Where were you when I needed you right back
Through the song, Tayler details how his relationship with a past lover is dwindling down into an uncontrollable emotional toll. “I was actually going through some stuff in my life at the time dealing with a bunch of shit on top of my little relationship problems,” Tayler recalls. “So I mean I was looking through beats, specifically looking for the disco-funk sound that the song brings, because at that time that sound was really pressing me. I was studying other songs with the same tempo and style and I felt the need to create something that brings those types of vibes.”
Relocating from New York to Florida early on in his life, it was here in Florida that Tayler found his love for music. “I actually started making beats when I was around like 14 on an iPad using GarageBand,” he cites. “But before then I always have had this connection to sounds and music growing up.”
Since then and on “faded & jaded”, Taylers vocal abilities compared to his early work have only grown exponentially wider. His soothing runs through “faded & jaded” are comparable to that of The Weeknd, Drake, and Swae Lee. It’s no surprise that he himself cites that these artists have had a huge influence on his own work.
“I have tons of artists I look up to, and I’m honestly a mad fucking student to this art,” Tayler states. “I study artists cadences and flows and ad libs and everything and then try to incorporate it into my own style I have myself.”
While the somber “faded & jaded” drifts easily into listeners ears, the heartbreaking lyrics are relatable to anyone going through an irregular relationship. “The idea of the record came from past experiences I’ve had in relationships myself,” Tayler notes. “The track is ultimately based on a girl I’m with and the problem that this girl is bringing to me and the problem I personally fear in a relationship. Lack of emotion.”
I don’t usually fuck over myself, hey // You got friends that’s dragging you through hell, yeah // I promised I keep me to myself // But Hollywood is floating with these girls
As Tayler prepares himself to further on with his career with a continuous slew of invoking singles and even a planned Christmas-themed project, his trajectory is seemingly limitless. Listen to “faded & jaded” below.
