Many people associate the name Corey Lingo with the masterful production behind hits like UnoTheActivist’s “Sometimes I Wonder,” D Savage’s “Kash Klay,” Ski Mask The Slump God’s “I DON’T CARE,” as well as countless songs with the late Fredo Santana; to an extent, they would be correct. The Atlanta native has spent the past half-decade crafting beats behind more critically-acclaimed SoundCloud classics than most could hope to accomplish in ten years time. As a member of the legendary producing group BeatPluggz with notable producers like MexikoDro, PoloBoyShawty and StoopidXool, Lingo’s masterful touch on the keys has earned him nothing short of notoriety in the producing world. Many know the name, but they don’t know the story and the craft behind it; they also don’t know that vocally, Corey Lingo is revolutionizing R&B on SoundCloud.
Comparisons to Chris Brown aside, his voice echoes thoroughly up and down different octaves, and his infamous “No cap!” ad-lib boasts a surprising crispness to it; Corey Lingo continues to exceed a vocal standard that finds itself completely and literally unmatched among his peers. His incredible tone and versatility carry beautifully across every instrumental despite the genre, and his recent remix of J. Holiday’s “Suffocate” is a prime example.
As is typical of the genre, the majority of Corey Lingo’s repertoire revolves around the subject of love, and “Suffocate” is no different. Crooning up and down a variety of luscious synths and vibrant sequences from Plug&B sensation Goyxrd, Lingo borrows the chorus from J. Holiday’s version while working in his own verse between the hooks. He addresses his own personal misgivings with his partner’s wanting to leave, unable to understand what he did to leave her fed up and unhappy with their relationship. Ultimately discovering that fabricated infidelity is the cause of her worries, he assures her over and over again that her presence in his life is and will always be the only thing he cares about.
“Honestly, I listen to a lot of ‘90s-00’s R&B, so I’ve been wanting to remix those types of songs for a minute” he said of his love for the original version and interest in remixing the song. “It’s been pretty hard for me to do so on the types of beats I usually get sent, but when I heard the beat that Goyxrd sent me, I instantly heard the idea in my head”.
“I suffocate when you’re away from me // So much love you take from me, I’m goin’ out of my mind”
While Corey Lingo’s voice certainly facilitates reining in a plethora of new listeners, his consistency continues to bring back fans old and new alike to his channel with new releases each week.
