Listen to the Charlotte native whose airy, high-pitched vocals are taking the rap scene by storm
Belis has had a month and a half most artists could only dream of. On April 14th, she dropped her Chris Surreal and Charlie Shuffler-produced track, “LEMONADE”, which has since garnered 136,000 plays. Shortly thereafter, she flew to LA and worked with acclaimed vocalist, producer, and songwriter Lil Aaron.
The jet-setting continued with her arriving in New York on May 28th, but things got off to a rocky start.
This unfortunate event, reinforces the fact that life is a series of ups and downs. While most artists would’ve seen getting sick as the end of their good fortune, Belis saw opportunity. “I was throwing up on the sidewalk the first day I got to New York and I figured I was still having more fun than half the people I know,” she says, “so I made a song about it.”
Despite being birthed from a bummer of a situation, “CHECK HIT”s purpose isn’t to remind you of the unpredictable negative experiences we encounter in life. It’s meant to lift you up and embrace your winning moments.
Producer Marvy Ayy does an excellent job bringing this sound to life by combining mellow synth bells with vibrant, slightly low passed drums that allow Belis to attack the beat with her patented blend of sweet sounding, self-assured bars.
“Tryna fuck with me, that bitch wouldn’t jump rope // She tryna stay around, she don’t make the bank roll”
The Charlotte native commands the attention of her audience immediately and never falters, not only with her confident lyricism, but by utilizing a variety of flows throughout the track. Switching intermittently between smooth and staccato, Belis’ variety of vocal deliveries keeps listeners active and engaged. The song’s bouncy catchiness isn’t the only thing that ups this track’s replayability factor.
The way Belis’ words bend and morph from one phrase to the next is what will keep people smashing that mfing repeat button. While she’s no stranger to lacking enunciation in her day to day life, her gibberish-at-times lyric pronunciations on this track serve as an enjoyable departure from her past work. This lack of consistent enunciation is something successful artists like Young Thug and Future have used in their music for years, and even been explained as an evolution in language, further proving that Belis is ready, willing and able to innovate her sound.
After listening, there’s no doubt this track is an undeniable earworm. The only thing that’s yet to be seen is where Belis will take her exciting sound next. Stream “CHECK HIT” below.
