Hook is the latest California artist showing great potential with her no-nonsense rhymes and a flow that is ripe with contempt for her naysayers.
Hook has been separating herself from the rest of the competition with her cheeky rhymes and staccato flow following the release of “90.” Recently, the Riverside California native dropped the single “Alright,” featuring AzChike and production by LowTheGreat. It’s full of shocking bars, exciting flows, and a complimentary beat — and it’s ironically without a hook.
LA to its core, the beat claps, dings, and grooves along with the bars. AzChike takes the mic for the first verse, attacking the beat with his signature sporadic flow and simile-riddled rhymes and wearing his regional influences proudly. Cartoonish, comical threats are a commonly used tool in AzChike’s repertoire, and this song is no different. He menacingly spits, “Choppa hit a n*gga back got him burping, blood red, sea sick, got a n*gga surfing, Imma bust like a virgin with some Jergens,” adding insult to injury to any who dare cross Chike.
Without a chorus separating the two MC’s, Hook comes in hot with her intoxicating, confident flow and cautionary lyrics about engaging in a physical relationship with her. “If he fuck once, then he an addict, you just subtract, n*gga I add it.” Throughout her verse, Hook proclaims and celebrates her rising stock price, thanks to her newly acquired following as well as co-sign from Soundcloud veteran Nedarb Nagrom.
