The most mysterious links of GothBoiClique revisit their old track with a new music video
GothBoiClique’s elusive døves has been busy carving his own ever-experimental niche into the underground. In 2019 alone he released two EPs, including his intimate collaboration with Fish Narc, Glass, as well as 333, which captivated listeners with its exploratory approach to production. Taking fans by surprise in his usual enigmatic style, døves has recently premiered the music video for “medicine,” revisiting his joint effort with JPDREAMTHUG from 2017’s ep2.
Teaming up with Arthur Cooke, brooding visuals accompany the melancholic ambiance of “medicine.” Opening with shadowy shots of dark clouds and grimy, monochrome flowers, a sense of forlornness sets the atmosphere as a fitting companion to the somber vocals throughout. Cooke cleverly intertwines apposite photography, such as closed eyes momentarily appearing as JPDREAMTHUG croons, “There’s a solace in your eyes.”
Yet, shots become gradually hazier and contorted, an almost subliminal feeling captivating the viewer as disparate words such as “home” and “from a bleeding heart” ominously flash. Cloudy visuals darken and become more surreal, mirroring døves’ tone as he expresses themes relating to substance misuse and the deterioration of relationships. Ambiguous shots add to the medicated tone ever-present throughout the track, immersing the listener in feeling equally sedated and surreal.
Cooke’s visuals work seamlessly to add another dimension to “medicine.” This indulgence into the past reflects døves’ unpredictable nature, but gives fans a nostalgic treat and leaves listeners guessing what’s next.
