100 gecs, the collaborative project between St. Louis natives Dylan Brady and Laura Les has seen an almost overnight transition from niche SoundCloud darlings to mainstays on trending Spotify playlists. Capitalizing on their newfound popularity, the duo released all of the stems for their newest record 1000 gecs over at 1000stems.com, inviting fans to remix. Artists well-known and unknown alike rejoiced. Here are seven of our favorite remixes that have been released so far:
“800db cloud” (King Yosef remix)
King Yosef has always actively embraced his metal influences in his own tracks, so it’s only apt that he gravitated towards 800db cloud, the heaviest track on 1000 gecs. Yosef utilizes severe dynamic shifts and chugging guitar to intensify the original as much as possible; stay listening to the end for his gut-wrenching take on the metal breakdown of the original.
“745 sticky” (Taylor Morgan remix)
Leaning heavily into nitecore and Midwest emo, Taylor Morgan crafts a relaxed and somber remix over clean guitar and trap drums. On paper, this should not work nearly as well as it does, but the talented production is inarguable, with the guitar being a definite highlight.
“hand crushed by a mallet” (Shinigami remix)
More of a cover than a remix, Shinigami reconstructs the original song with his own vocals and a drum-and-bass drop. The added second verse by Shini is perfect, embracing the pop-punk feel of the original’s vocals.
“I Need Help Immediately” (Yung Skrrt remix)
While some took obvious routes on their gecs remixes, Yung Skrrt refused to take the easy way out, and instead rearranged what is arguably the most irritating song from 1000 gecs to a point beyond recognition. Some of the sounds of the original are still there in disfigured, chopped-up form over a deep 808, shifting the song from a comedic thinkpiece to a definite bop.
“800db cloud” (ARMAN remix)
Instead of amping up the heaviness of 800db cloud like King Yosef, ARMAN instead amps up the silliness. Rapidly changing tempos, samples of the shine sound effect from Melee, a bike horn, and a meow attempt to distract you from a remix that is, at times, very danceable. If any remix so far gets to the heart of the 100 gecs ethos, it’s this one.
“gec 2 Ü” (4evr remix)
While the original “gec 2 Ü” track is memorable for its energetic race-to-the-finish ending, 4evr switches things up by turning down the BPM and replacing the instrumental with laid-back synths and a sparse drum track. The result is a chill house track with a completely new identity; the heart-stopping climax is gone, but 4evr gives us a pulsing, nearly hypnotic groove in its place.
“stupid horse” (Alfred English remix)
In a remix that is at once both danceable and mosh-ready, Alfred English mixes dancefloor piano with dubstep-esque distortion to recenter one of the most fun tracks from 1000 gecs. The initial drop of the remix is a stark and heavy moment, one that sets up the track to hit that much harder when the drums come back in.
