From the emo/alt-rock outfit Crooks to SoundCloud, the ongoing creative development of the UK-based artist continues to burn brightly
Sullii has transitioned seamlessly into the underground last year, with highlights including a collaboration on the title track for Jay Vee’s Hiraethand an extensive run of tour dates across Europe with nothing, nowhere. Following the well received release of his debut album You and Everything Blue in spring, his latest track offers an honest, reflective contemplation of unrequited love and unresolved feelings.
These themes are introduced from the onset, propped up by the harmonious balance between Sullii’s gentle, melodic vocal flow and crestfallen guitar chords which give way to a compellingly dynamic beat. Wasting little time, he dives straight in, enquiring “Why’d you wanna waste my time?” An open call out, “Hindsight” quickly takes shape as a laborious letter of love to the one who got away. What makes Sullii’s intricate lyricism so appealing is an intelligent use of emotive metaphors accompanied by the soul-stirring passion in his voice. It’s hardwired into human nature to harbour desires of acknowledgement and validation. The ego craves being valued and the insecurity provoked by a lack thereof is epitomised in resonating fashion through croons of, “Baby I’m a ghost am I?”
As “Hindsight” comes to a close, the outro issues a darker, morose disposition, with a subdued drum pattern the fading backdrop to quieter, stripped back vocals. Harsh in tone, the rawness in Sullii’s voice is the end product of frustration that has built up steadily throughout the track, as he bitterly reminisces over a time “back when you were into us, but now you’re intermittent.” Writing from the heart, there are no frills or lavish statements in his work. Armed with refreshing sincerity and a simple desire to create, Sullii is carving out a well earned space of his own in the scene.
