The rapper/songstress’ debut is an impressive display of contrasting styles
“Yes, it’s a love song,” Atlanta rapper BKTHERULA writes in the official description for her single “TWEAKIN’ TOGETHER.” Produced by Mars Beats, BK’s feathery half-rapping-half-singing melts into lush production as she professes her love for her soulmate, all the while expressing her disdain for internet beef and preference of high-capacity submachine guns. Released in August of 2019, the breakthrough single has amassed over a half-million streams on SoundCloud, with an accompanying video featuring BK alongside her pumped-up clique later uploaded to YouTube in December. She’s also been working closely with California rapper HOOK, sharing their lively first single “YASS” under the name HULA.
Capitalizing on this momentum, BKTHERULA released her debut album Love Santana earlier this week. With eleven tracks running just over 23 minutes, Love Santana is a sweet-and-sour combo of BKTHERULA’s intoxicating melodies and razor-sharp one-liners. Rapping like she has a devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, the hazy, dreamlike atmosphere she crafts on tracks “UH HUH” and “TWEAKIN’ TOGETHER” is well balanced with the rip-roaring production and punchy bars heard on “OFFICIAL” and “REVOLVER.” BKTHERULA shares that the album’s contrasting sounds were intentional, stating, “I want this album to be able to help people get through the hard days and to hype them up on the good ones.” No matter which mood you may be in, listen to the Atlanta rapper’s debut below.
