Lil Lotus’ “I Don’t Even Like U” is a passionate new single about coping with the memories of someone you’ve lost. More energetic than his work on Bullet, the tack’s incessant beat and lyrics provide a blend of denial and vulnerability. In the titular moment, Lotus—who recently signed to Epitaph Records—cries out, “I don’t even like you/I just like the idea, having someone right here,” before reminiscing, “now we’re sleeping alone/and all the things that we said’s just a text on a phone.” While he may be pushing a former lover away, he embraces some seriously impressive production. Despite the heartbreaking lyrics, the single is an upbeat anthem with a guitar riff circa classic Green Day—it is this sort of melody that he and his Boyfriendz bandmates, Smrtdeath and Lil Aaron, thrive on. Anxious and vulnerable, but outrageously catchy, Lotus shares his true colors, providing the sense that this is the artist we’ve been waiting for.
