The effortlessly catchy release with frequent collaborator YAWNS welcomes a new era in the Gothboiclique member’s career.
In many ways, Cold Hart is a veteran of the emo revival wave. His music and style have pushed him to the front of internet music culture, and he has been instrumental in making experimental sounds a bit more palatable for a general audience through his punk infusions. Last year, his collaborative album with YAWNS, Good Morning Cruel World, made a lasting impression on listeners. Now, with the help of thislandis, the duo returns with a new single to celebrate Cold Hart’s signing to Epitaph Records, along with colleagues LiL Lotus, Smrtdeath, and guccihighwaters. It’s easy to imagine Cold Hart, something of a vanguard of the genre, acting as a sort of grandfather to the rest. His music has always been dynamic while maintaining his signature sound, and “Tammy and the T-Rex” is no different.
The single features the Gothboiclique member’s usual themes of yearning and youthful restlessness, as Cold Hart asks someone to “Take my brain out my head / Cause I can’t stop / Thinking bout you in my bed.” The listener is led to imagine Coldy tossing and turning, and the lyrics are simultaneously distant and vulnerable. While he reports that his hair’s jet black and “you know I got the heart to match,” the chorus explains that his love for his sweetheart is the size of a dinosaur. The impressive production matches that of Coldy’s past projects. It features a ’90s ska twang on the guitar melody with a harder, aggressive riff playing over top. The result is an effortlessly catchy single that still packs a punch, a quintessential Cold Hart track which perfectly launches him into the next phase of his career.
