The 17-year-old Australian-born, Michigan-based artist released her debut in June, the anthemic “Love Me Low.” Her second track further perpetuates the distinctive delivery and dreamlike pop stylings she’s begun to be known for; her voice, both vulnerable and powerful, demonstrating her evocative style and lyrical prowess.
“Runaway” encapsulates the desire to start over – to live in a blissfully idyllic lifestyle. “Take off your sweater in this hot weather, burning up just looking over there at you,” she says before passionately declaring, “let’s run away here.” Initially recorded on her ukelele while watching a coastal sunset, Ai Bendr crafts a harmonious self-produced soundscape to accompany alluring lyricism. “What I think makes Runaway really special is that it comes from an emotion,” she says. “There are times when I get overwhelmed with that feeling of wanting to run away to some beautiful island and leave all of my worries behind, and that’s what I was feeling at the beach that day and the song just flowed out.”
