Not many upstart artists score viral hits on their first try, and the few that do often struggle to live up to their breakout songs. South Memphis rapper Baby Hot stands out as a recent exception to this conventional wisdom. The video for Baby Hot’s debut single, “Spin The Block,” blew up on the YouTube channel of prominent local director LMB Filmz last fall, and his resonant follow-up releases – “Message,” “No Safety,” “Going Straight In” – suggest he’s more than a one hit wonder.

Baby Hot is an inheritor of Memphis hip-hop’s rich history. He’s mentioned in interviews that both of his parents used to rap, and he cites hometown heroes like Young Dolph and Key Glock as formative influences. On his sophomore single “Message,” Baby Hot unloads his syllables with the precision of a marching snare soloist. He skillfully pivots from curt punchlines to complex run-on sentences, and his confidence blooms with each couplet. When he punches out, you’re left with the sense that he’s only getting warmed up.
