Hafsol Lets Go of the Past on “Fly-By Spring”

The Holy Mountain collaborator continues to carve out his own lofi lane

Vocalist, songwriter, and producer Hafsol may be familiar to UU readers for his extensive work with Holy Mountain, but the Chicago-based artist is an equally prolific solo performer. Grounded in a lofi indie ethos, his art is deeply intimate and introspective, like a secret whispered between friends. “Fly-By Spring” synthesizes that sentiment into a stunning outing grounded in etheric production, waxing and waning with lush flourishes of piano and guitar that establish vivid atmospheric tendencies. Hafsol’s vocals give the track a soulful bent, subtly relaying musings on leaving the past year behind before incisively snarling, “And so I say to the heavens I’ll change course!”

The single’s self-directed music video ties all of these elements into one potent package as the Chicago waterfront slowly becomes the main focus of his reflections, absorbing a masked-up Hafsol into the towers and tides under an orange-inflected sky.
